An itinerary starting from Rifugio Malghera and climbing up to Pian del Lago.
The trail then continues downhill to Casera di Sacco and returns to the refuge.
Rifugio Malghera takes its name from the rural settlement of the same name and is located at 1,964 metres above sea level in the western Val Grosina, within the municipality of Grosio (Sondrio), Valtellina.
It can be reached by car via the old and fascinating farmers’ route of the valley, now almost entirely paved. Malghera (Kompass Map 96 – A7) is included in routes R73 and R74 of the Via Alpina, the remarkable itinerary connecting the Principality of Monaco with Trieste across the Alps.
The refuge is open every day from mid-June to early October.
It is particularly suitable for holidays or gatherings of large groups, but it is also possible to book rooms for individuals, families or groups of friends for a holiday immersed in nature.
Rifugio Malghera was established at the beginning of the last century, driven by the needs and wishes of the local population, at the same time as the construction of the Sanctuary of Madonna del Muschio. Its original name was Case della Chiesa, and management is still entrusted today to the Fabbriceria, an association made up of volunteers appointed by the local population owning land in the valley and by the parish priest of Grosio.
This deep historical connection is reflected in the celebrations held in Malghera: beginning with the devotional pilgrimage on foot on the last Sunday of May, followed by the opening festival of the alpine pasture in early June, the solemn feast of the Assumption on 15 August, and the closing of the alpine pasture on the second Sunday of October.
The structure covers 800 square metres of living space spread over three floors, with 90 beds (with disposable bed linen available on request), bathrooms with showers, and a professionally equipped kitchen with the option of self-catering.
